Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Principal Designer under CDM 2015?+
The Principal Designer is the designer appointed by the client to plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate health and safety in the pre-construction phase of a project. Under CDM 2015, a Principal Designer must be appointed on any project involving more than one contractor.
Do I need a Principal Designer for my project?+
If your project involves more than one contractor — including a main contractor and any specialist subcontractors — you are legally required to appoint a Principal Designer under CDM 2015. If you are unsure whether this applies to your project, get in touch and we can advise.
What is the difference between a Principal Designer and a CDM Advisor?+
The Principal Designer has a formal statutory role under CDM 2015 and must be a designer with control over the pre-construction phase. A CDM Advisor provides guidance and support to the client and design team on CDM compliance without holding the statutory Principal Designer role. We provide both services.
How does the subscription model work?+
The subscription model is designed for clients who deliver three or more CDM-qualifying projects per year. We agree a fixed annual fee covering all projects within the subscription period, with a price guarantee for the duration of the agreement. This removes the need to negotiate fees project by project and ensures consistent, structured CDM support across your portfolio.
